Year 7 and 8 students from North Street School tried their hand at baking wholegrain bread rolls today in Wholegrain Organics’ bakery kitchen. After weighing in the correct amount of water, yeast, wholegrain flour and salt they kneaded by hand for 10 minutes, getting quite sticky hands in the process! While the rolls were rising they learnt about the different grains, and the grinding process to make flour.
We then went to a plot of land where we grow fresh herbs for the cafe where students had to identify the herbs, harvest herbs for vegetable soup for lunch and have a go at planting some seedlings.
We finished the day back at school chopping kumera, carrot, celery, potato, onion, garlic, pumpkin and fresh herbs to make a delicious creamy vegetable soup (click here for the recipe.)
A fun day enjoyed by all, and a delicious lunch, not a skerrick left!
